Mesa is one of only two drawings in this catalog that put a cactus in the skyline, and it earns it: the desert takes the right-hand quarter and the town stops well before the edge.
What is in the drawing
A church opens the left under a steep pitched roof and a pointed steeple, its walls cut with narrow openings. A low dome follows, drawn as a fan of straight ribs meeting at the top rather than as a curve. Then the centre: a tented roof rising to a point above an arcade scalloped along its lower edge, with a gabled front and a cluster of small pinnacles standing beside it. A block ribbed with verticals carries the line right, low buildings step down after it, and the drawing finishes past a saguaro and a run of flat-topped hills.
Mug or canvas
Running 2.728 to 1 it is well past the mug band, so the wrap closes with the church meeting the hills. Coverage of 0.054 keeps it light. The ribbed dome is the detail to think about: those ribs converge at the top and merge into a solid wedge when the drawing is small, which is the one thing 11oz gets wrong. From 18 by 12 upward they hold apart.
