Bologna is drawn as a city of arcades with two tall plain towers at the end of it, side by side and slightly different in height, which is the pair the city is known for and the reason people pick this drawing out.
What is in the drawing
A small capped tower on a square base opens the left, in front of a long palace with a scalloped arcade beneath a row of battlements. A Gothic church rises past it, a pointed front between two pinnacles, with a lower gabled church at its side. A wide arcade runs under a battlemented tower. Then the two towers stand together at the right, plain shafts, the taller one a little ahead.
Mug or canvas
At 2.122 to 1 this drawing is very nearly the proportion of the print band, so a mug carries it whole with the towers at the seam. Ink of 0.103 gathers in the arcades, which are the first thing to soften on a small print. The towers hold at any size; the arcades want 24 by 16.
