Boston is two cities stacked in one view and the drawing refuses to pick between them. Half of it is arches and steep roofs and the other half is flat glass, and they stand shoulder to shoulder without any transition.

What is in the drawing

The line runs in low and flat from the left, along a hall whose whole front is a row of arches. It climbs a stone tower with a notched crown and a steep pitched roof beside it, drops through a small angled shed, then spreads across a broad building with a pyramid roof set over a run of arched openings, arcaded again along its base. From there it goes straight up. A tower with a squared collar carries a mast, and behind it stand a row of tall slabs with rounded tops, one of them faceted into a hard zigzag down its whole height. Past a capped tower and a plain rectangle the ground rises to a squat block with a curved top, and the drawing closes on a steep roof crowded with pinnacles, arched and turreted at its base.

Mug or canvas

Nearly all the ink here is repeated fine work: the arcades at both ends, the zigzag running down the faceted tower, the pinnacles on the right. That is the case for size, because fine repeated marks are always the first thing to close up. It is a shade wider than the mug's printable band, so it uses the full wrap, and at 24 by 16 and beyond the arches stop being a texture and start being arches.
