Birmingham is drawn as one continuous ridge of buildings. There is no landmark set apart from the rest and no low stretch to rest the eye, which makes it the least ornamented American drawing in the range.
What is in the drawing
A squat block with a jagged roofline takes the far left, and the towers begin immediately behind it with almost no ground showing between them. They climb in irregular steps, some squared off, some cut by narrow slots running their full height. A slim shaft carries a thin spike above the middle, the sharpest point in the picture, and beside it a tower finishes in a pointed crown over a broad plain slab. Toward the right one building rises with a curved shoulder that leans away from its neighbours, and the line ends on a sharp gable dropping straight to the base.
Mug or canvas
The ratio is 2.119 to 1, a whisker under the 2.143 mug band, so the wrap comes within a few millimetres of closing on itself. That makes this one of the better mug candidates in the batch. Coverage of 0.058 is middling and evenly spread, with no dense corner and no empty one. Size is a taste decision here rather than a legibility one, which is unusual in this range.
