Baltimore is drawn low and wide, with the harbour buildings given as much room as the towers behind them. It is one of the few skylines here that opens on something you walk into rather than something you look up at.
What is in the drawing
A long pavilion opens the left, its roof pitched like a tent and its front carried on a row of arches, with a flat block set either side of it. Behind that the line climbs into angular office towers, one drawn as two slabs leaning together, and a needle-thin spire rises between them. A tower with a sharp pointed crown stands at the center above a wide banded building, and beside it sits a squat dome with a small lantern and a curl on top. The right half stays lower across scalloped frontages before lifting a last time into a broad tower capped by a half dome, and a stacked column of boxes closes the drawing at the far right.
Mug or canvas
The art runs to 2.26, longer than the cup can show at once, so it carries right around and meets itself behind the handle instead of facing front as a panel. Ink coverage is on the low side at just under a tenth, and the weight is spread evenly from the pavilion to the far column instead of massing in one place. That even spread is what makes it read at mug size. On canvas the width means deep margins above and below, which suits it: the pavilion arches are the detail worth the room.
